Where we are

Articles and section pages are built as ordinary text. Body copy sets at 19 to 20px, every page has one h1 and a real heading order under it, nothing sets below 4.5 to 1 against the paper, there is a skip link to the articles, and the whole site can be driven from the keyboard: anything that lights up under the mouse lights up the same way under a keyboard. Motion obeys your system setting. If you have asked for reduced motion, nothing on this site moves on its own.

What we know is wrong, and the big one is the front page

The front page does not fit a phone. It is drawn artwork rather than text, and on a 375px screen it renders about 1,100px wide, so roughly two thirds of it sits past the right edge where you cannot reach it. The type on it scales down with the drawing, to around 5 to 10px. That is unreadable, and it is worst for exactly the readers this publication is written for. It is being rebuilt.

Until it is, everything on the front page is reachable another way, and no article lives only there: the nine section pages, the full list of every article and the search are all ordinary text pages that work at any width. If the front page is giving you trouble, those are the way in.

One smaller fault, measured and real: a number of controls are smaller than the 44px square that a finger reliably hits, including one 24px control on the article page, which does at least sit inside a 44px label that toggles it.
